Plates per side

Total weight must exceed bar weight.

    How It Works

    • Target weight: The total barbell weight you want to load
    • Bar weight: Standard Olympic bars are 45 lb / 20 kg (adjustable)
    • Available plates: Toggle which plates your gym has—the calculator only uses what you select
    • Per side: Results show plates for ONE side; load the same on both ends

    Example

To load 225 lbs on a 45 lb bar, you need 90 lbs per side. That's a 45 and two 25s—or a 45, a 35, and a 10. The calculator shows you the most efficient combination.

    FAQ

Change the bar weight in the settings. Women's Olympic bars are typically 35 lb / 15 kg. Some specialty bars vary. Enter your actual bar weight for accurate results.

Some weights aren't achievable with standard plates. If you need 227.5 lbs but only have 5 lb increments, round to 225 or 230. Enable smaller plates like 2.5s if your gym has them.

Functionally no—weight is weight. But loading largest plates closest to the collar is standard practice for stability and easier counting.
