How It Works

  • Training max: Your best recent gym lift—typically a heavy single or estimated max
  • Strategy: Conservative (safe 9/9), moderate (room to grow), or aggressive (going for broke)
  • Attempts: First attempt = opener (easy), second = build (solid), third = PR attempt
  • Rounding: Weights are rounded to legal increments (2.5 kg or 5 lb jumps)

Example

If your gym squat max is 450 lbs with a moderate strategy: opener at 405 (90%), second at 430 (95%), third at 450–460 depending on how the day goes.

Your opener should feel easy. Never open with something you haven't tripled in training.

FAQ

If you miss your opener, repeat it. If you miss your second, either repeat or drop slightly. Never jump up after a miss—secure a total first, then chase PRs.

Use a weight you've actually lifted—preferably within the last 4–6 weeks. Calculated maxes from high-rep sets can overestimate your true competition max.

Conservative. Your goal is to go 9/9 and post a total. Meet-day nerves, timing, commands, and equipment all affect performance. Build experience before chasing big PRs.

Yes. Most federations allow changes up until a certain point before your attempt. Adjust based on how you're feeling and how lifts are moving.
